Fish Care

Generally we bleed our fish as soon as they are brought onboard the boat. If time permits between bites, the salmon are gutted as soon as possible to preserve the quality of meat.

Once back at the cleaning table you can decide how you would like your catch cleaned and cut. There are several options on what you can do with your fish such as filleting, steaks, or in the round.

Bring your own coolers. The bigger the coolers the better, especially if you like to keep your salmon in the round. Not enough cooler space is all to common a problem. BRING LOTS OF COOLERS! Quality ice is supplied and fish are packed in cooler together with ice.

If you would like your catch frozen, we can package and label your fish and place them in the freezer until your ready to leave.

Smoking and canning of your catch can be arranged immediately after the fishing trip. St.Jeans Cannery has a depot in Ucluelet where you can drop off your fish. For more information on St. Jeans Cannery go to www.stjean.com

What To Bring

For full and half day charters it is a good idea to bring your own rain gear and rubber boots. It is not totally necessary as you may be blessed with sunny weather, but this is the west coast and its good to be prepared.I do carry spare rain gear and floater suits on board if necessary. Dress in layers so you can adjust to different weather conditions and activity levels. Believe me, you can work up quite a sweat reeling in a couple of halibut from 300 feet. Bring your own lunch, snacks and drinks in a medium size cooler for easy access and storage. Lunches and drinks can be supplied upon request. You will also need 2 or 3 large coolers for your catch. This is absolutely necessary unless you plan on having your catch smoked or canned. Smoking and canning can be arranged in Ucluelet, immediately after the fishing trip. Saltwater fishing license with salmon conservation sticker for each person fishing on the boat. Camera or video are always a good idea to capture all the fishing and wildlife action.

Matt,

The best fishing experience I have ever had. I have fished in Alaska, Rivers Inlet, Queen Charlotte Islands, Big Bay and numerous other places around the world. Kirk was a First Class Guide and took great care to make sure we were at the right spot at the right time. He constantly checked the gear and adjusted the depth to give us the best possible chance of catching fish. We caught and released over 50 silvers and over 20 Chinooks.

The 21′ Grady White boat was excellent in the Ocean, we never felt unsafe. Kirk cleaned and filleted our fish just the way we like them.

Have a safe and successful season.

Thank You very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best Time to Fish

EAR ROUND SALMON AND HALIBUT FISHING CALENAR

UCLUELET – Summer Months

May 1 to September 30 is considered prime time for salmon and halibut sports fishing here on the west coast of Vancouver Island. This is the time when the weather starts to cooperate and the salmon and halibut start moving through in large numbers. Ucluelets’ location allows us to fish for salmon and halibut on the offshore banks, shoreline points and bays, and the protected islands of Barkley Sound, just minutes away from Ucluelet harbour.

Large concentrations of chinook salmon, coho salmon and halibut begin to migrate and feed in both inshore and offshore areas near Ucluelet, following thick balls of bait such as herring, pilchards(sardines), needlefish, squid, and krill. All ages of salmon and halibut are in the area, making the bite hard to keep up with at times. Ucluelet has the most consistent and dependable fishing on the B.C. coast throughout this time period for chinook salmon, coho salmon and halibut.
